Re : exponential / asymptotic / geometric / monotonically increasing --

I read something in a recent issue of Wired magazine that talked about the level at which the "experts" predict that the total population of the Earth will "peak out."

(I always look at these graphs and think about the graph I first saw in 10th grade biology class).

(The graph of the number of bacteria that are alive in a single Petri dish). (With a finite supply of food (!)).

Anyway, if I remember correctly, the predicted number (for humans) is around 8 billion.

Apropos (whoo ! first time I've ever used that word in my entire life) to this discussion ... I once read that the non-profit entities to which both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates plan to dedicate a major portion of their estates / foundations (when they are gone) ... are ones that deal with human population study and solutions.

Wherever I read this, I remember seeing the "letters to the editor" a month or two later, and several peoples' comments on their choice.

The letters all said (politely) : "What a bunch of douchebags. All intelligent study of this "problem" indicate that there is no problem !"

Jon.

P.S. I'll go look for a link to that article from Wired magazine. It was not a long article, so it might not have "made it" into Wired's website.
