if standardized products had no margin appeal then SRAM, DRAM and PHY-comm chips almost never would be profitable - which you know isn'T true.. With standards you adress a large market. You of course may opt to serve a nice and finally fade away with 100% market share of a $0 market. Look at the fate of AAPL and RMBS. I never bought into their story. To me both point to the absurdity of a too high degree of proprietory technology in contrast to more standardized offerings. My hypothesis: it's more important to capture temporary competitive advantages than locking yourself out of the mass market. In fact this is what INTC has been doing to the max - and with great success..
