Unexpected boom in second homes outside NYC since 9-11

Many of those who can afford it are already cutting down on "exposure time" in the city where they might get caught up in random terrorist mayhem. The second home by the ocean or in the mountains has always been popular here but areas within commuting distance of the city have experienced a real estate boom since September.

"A lot of families have simply decided to make their second homes their primary homes since September," said Jane Ross, a real estate agent near upstate Woodstock, a two-hour drive from the city. "I think the idea of having a safe haven, especially if you've got kids, is very reassuring to people in a time like this."

Tillman's a good man, and marches to his own drummer. That kind of sacrifice was common among professional athletes during WWII and Korea (Ted Williams, among others, missed out on the most productive years of his career by serving in the military in both conflicts). The fact that Tillman's choice is so deemed newsworthy is indicative of the general decline of morals and of commitment to national service in the U.S., IMO. Back then it would hardly get noticed.
