Dow is slower at reconstituting its components than other indices. The SPX tends to add the industries with momementum, and drop the dogs. Fourty-five percent of the S&P 500 market cap consisted of energy and basic materials stocks in 1980. See sector weights chart.

The weighting higher if you pull up the S&P 500 growth index. The all-time peak was technology in 2000 when it comprised over 60% of the growth stock index.
