These lands make up much of the territory of the western states. Surprise! True. One wonders what the development of the western US would look like if it were otherwise. Good map at Bureau of Land Management website, bigger ones available if you have a fast connection. blm.gov I agree with your argument that subsidizing any industry hurts the economy as a whole. The screams of agony of those being cut off from the public teat are sometimes too overwhelming for the politicians to bear, unfortunately. We need corporate welfare reform. CB@milked_dry.com
