Good points. The anonymity aspect seems to me to be somewhat exaggerated, though, insofar as there are touchstones of authentication. After all, a child will not write like me, very few females are as aggressive as JLA, and there are plenty of people from DC, for example, to verify that the others know the District pretty well, and probably do, in fact, live in the metro area. One can deceive, yes, but not much more than in a bar, say, and a cross dresser can even adopt a false gender identity. It is not even unusual to develop a fairly close conversational relationship with someone whose home one never visits, for example, someone at work who confides in you. Thus, although you are somewhat right, I would not press anonymity too far.

There is more to the point about off- the- cuff language, but even then, I was contrasting thread interaction with conversation, not essays. The question is:"Why does it seem that many people behave more primitively on the threads than they would if face to face?" After all, conversation is even more "off the cuff"........
