I don't know many (actually, any) people in 3d who intentionally associate with people who would ridicule everything they believe. Yet the political threads on SI are basically exactly that. From the very beginning you could see absolutists from both sides of the aisles calling each other names over opposing ideas, and choosing to stay on those threads. And some people have been on those threads for years. It clearly has some pleasurable attraction for some people. I followed one thread for a while. Then didn't look at it for a couple of years. Went back and looked at it recently and it is essentially the same. Which is interesting.
