If someone is withholding knowledge of information that may be useful to the prosecutors, they may be more inclined to cooperate now rather than take on the much larger risk of being accused of being a traitor.
Why would they not destroy any evidence they could get their hands on and thus make themselves safer and prosecution more difficult?

Or flee the country?

Or both?

It seems to me a more rational strategy would be to say nothing and let them believe they are safe and no one is in pursuit.

I stick with the idea that a prosecutor is preparing to run for Congress or the governor's office.
