The main expansion was in the area of cues that help to convey meaning, like tone of voice or expression. The rest was a further meditation on points I had raised about frame of reference and the like.

A good writer has means to get around some of the deficiencies of the medium, for example, by the use of rhythm and emphasis. But it is true that few people have the resources to deploy, and that even better writers might suffer when they cannot take much time to revise. Add to that that readers are of markedly different abilities, and may miss various cues, and it can get rather messy.

In the other case, words intend concepts, and concepts point to abstractions from experience, with the possible, controverted exception of ideas needed to comprehend in the first place. Experience varies, and there are some variations in the way we represent it intellectually. Yes, from this can arise important misunderstandings, which are not always easily cured.
