HJ, I doubt that a lot of the "experts" who chime in on the subject of analysts ever spent much time in a research department.

Coincidentally, I had been doing similar analysis to what you posted, only for Blodget.

In early October 1999, Blodget followed roughly 18 stocks. 16 were investment banking clients. None of the 16 were rated higher than the two non-investment banking clients, however, the two non-clients were rated higher than 12 of the investment banking clients.

When Blodget started up coverage of stocks previously followed by Jonathan Cohen, there were six stocks that overlapped and four were clients. Blodget upgraded the two non-clients, downgraded two clients, and left two clients unchanged.

This data ought to send many critics back to the drawing board to focus on the legitimate issues, but I'm sure it won't.
