I think it is also true that while people may be able to sit back and withhold judgment on some issues, most people have hot button issues that make them look like idiots. If you happen to observe them giving forth on one of their hot button issues you might make the mistake of thinking they are a cretin (unless of course you agree with them and it is also your hot button issue), when they are only really emotionally hobbled on one or two issues. That doesn't explain everyone, but it explains some people.
