Jorg, unfortunately it's those very policies that have brought us to where we are. Sharon campaigned on a very hard-line approach and was elected in the belief it might work. He actually became a bit of a provocateur building new settlements, arming the settlers, encouraging them to have conflict so he could send in the military etc.

His Temple Mount visit setting the stage.

It has not worked and didn't in Algeria, or Ireland or Lebanon or anywhere else that I know of where a UN opposed occupation existed.

The solution is to begin serious dialogue that will lead to a division of the land that will allow for security for Israel and a home for the Palestinians. When serious discussions were taking place that both sides believed in there was almost a 2 year break in this violence. One can support Israel without supporting Sharon. 67% of the Israelis that live there don't support his policies and consider them a detriment to the peace process and will not vote for him again according to a recent Israeli poll.
