The drivers are so courteous that, to a NYer, one finds oneself confused at times: like, why are they pulling up at this intersection? OMG, it's to let me cross the street!

real courtesy would be laying down a cloak for you if there were puddles

you may find out if it ever rains

once when I was walking downtown wearing a pair of beautiful red suede shoes and it was wet, snowing, slushy - a man carried me across the street gutter

I gave him a kiss for being so chivalrous [jla would say I mashed him - not all mashing is bad]

This was my impresson of CA drivers when I first got here from NY. Ubfortunately, it has grown way too much since then and I doubt if there's much difference now.

I send congratulations and felicitations from Seattle, which one would hardly know was a rainy city.
You didn't know this? :-)

I'm so glad that you get to see Seattle sans umbrella. It is a beautiful city, although I think Portland is prettier still.

I'll never forget the first year I lived in Portland. During the month of May the sun appeared once for half a day. A week before the big annual Rose Festival celebrations, My brother and sister-in-law came to visit and we went to the world-famous International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park. Normally, the hundreds of bushes are loaded with thousands of blooms at that time of year. There were so few that we could count them: 8 blooming flowers.

It didn't really matter because the view from there of the city and Mt. Hood is breathtaking.
