Subject:WWII

<<I am reading, "With the Old Breed, At Peleliu and Okinawa", Gene Sledge's account of his Marine combat experience in WWII. It is considered one of the finest books on combat ever written. It shows that the combat with the Japanese was so fierce that we would have taken unbelievable casualties if we had invaded Japan proper>>

I have always been interested in this era. Looks like I will put that book on my to read list. Also the history channel had a program on T.V. called Great Blunders The Japanese Kamikaze. I think this tape is at the historychannel.com.

Here are a few of the highlights of the program and why we nuked japan. The program seems to agree with Gene Sledges book as above. They mentioned that as they were getting closer and closer to the main island that the japanese were fanatical with their resistance. Every member of society was trained to fight against the invasion to the death.
The program mentioned that during the battle of Guadal Canal almost every japanese died. There was only one japanese survivor and 40,000 dead.
In Feb 45' U.S. lands on Iwo Jima took three weeks to secure and the Japanese suffered another 20,000 dead. April 45' on Okinawa 110,000 dead and 2400 kamikaze planes lost. They go on to explain that it took flame throwers to get them out of their fox holes. These are just a couple that they mentioned. During this campaign I think the U.S. suffered some where around 60k casualties. I could watch it again and get the exact figures if need be.

The reason they give as to why we dropped the bomb was that the military planners estimated that we would suffer around 200k dead and the japanese more than 2 million.
After the bomb was dropped, we discovered that the japanese were within about about 5 days of releasing fleas in the U.S. to create a plague. I do not remember off hand which one it was. Seems the japanese had tested this on the chinese people whom suffered a couple hundred thousand deaths.
Also a side note to this story was that by dropping the bomb, it stopped the Soviet Union from continuing farther south of the japanese islands. The historians regard this as why we do not have a north and south japan like we do Korea. So in hind site it seems that dropping the bomb actually saved lives and kept northern japan islands from being under Soviet control.
But what about the radiation. This does not bother me after hearing stories of how they treated our POW's and what they were doing to live people on medical experiments. Also this event would not have happened if we were not attacked. Doesn't that sound familiar.
On the subject of the surprise attack in Hawaii. This was also on this tape. Seems the radar guys noticed the blips on their scopes coming from the north. They called this in to their superiors at headquarters but they were told that it was probably our planes that they were expecting to arrive from the mainland. Now with news coming out about the FBI, maybe I will get to watch it on another great blunder in American History.
On the subject of searching the internet. I also use google search, another search engine to try is findarticles.com this site lets you search all types of printed media. Try searching for your real name if you want to get paranoid. r dr r r
