I think the article gave a very good scenario.

Pick up a glass that was held by the "target" then create a copy. The people who did the experiments were able to do exactly that, using latent fingerprints.

In a situation where the person was validated by a combination of a swipe card and a fingerprint, the swipe-card would probably have the owners' fingerprints on it ready to be lifted. Steal the card, and you would have both "pieces" of the puzzle.
