<PAKISTANI scientists had been secretly working around the clock for the past three years to accelerate production of weapons-grade uranium for atomic warheads, said one of the country's leading nuclear physicists.

Pervez Hoodbhoy, professor of nuclear physics at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad, said there were clear indications that nuclear warheads were in place on missiles, and that there could be many more warheads than previously thought. "The scientists have been working in three shifts over the past three years since the Kargil conflict," Dr Hoodbhoy said.

"We are much closer to a nuclear confrontation with India than at any other time."
Pakistan was thought to have 30 to 50 nuclear warheads. Each warhead was thought to have the same explosive power as the US atomic weapon dropped over Hiroshima in 1945. India was believed to have already taken its warheads out of storage to be fitted to delivery systems.>

I have started hearing talks of 20 million here and 30 million there, numbers of human casualties being discussed as losses on stock markets, that fatalistic mentality is the sign of lack of respect we accord to an individual life, this is the most disturbing aspect of the present crisis, in nuclear exchanges no one is going to be a winner, the winner and the loser both will scars that shall be remembered for posterity. I just don’t see war happening Indian and Pakistanis realize that the consequences can be very grave however that does not mean that nuclear weapons should become a toll of black mail by either side. These are no ‘toys’ and I hope that these playthings will be tucked away fast. On a positive note I do consider that deterrence will help in some way to avoid even a conventional confrontation. Since introduction of nuclear weapons in the region we have had no wears although a lot of upping of ante has happened on several occasions. You take care and love to your family.
