Muruntau is impressive
Newmont has made a mine by just heap leaching the stockpiles the Soviets did not treat.

"The project’s resource consists of low-grade gold-bearing material that was mined from the Muruntau quartz-stockwork system, hosted in metamorphosed sediments, over a 25-year period."

"The operation is scheduled for an 18-year life. For 2000, Newmont has reported gold output as 498,800oz at a cash operating cost of $129/oz."
