FYI, the Pentium 4 price cuts are largely a non-event. Business as usual, at least by standards of the last 2 years. They were pre-announced within the industry several weeks ago. I saw the exact list of percentage cuts posted on an overclockers website 2 weeks ago. The information is released to retailers well in advance to avoid disruptions in the distribution chain.

Also FYI, the new top of the line is the 2.53MHz chip, which was, as usual, cut only a small percentage. The 29% cut on the 2.4 is about the usual for the first cut on a previous-fastest chip. Prices for the 2.4 had NOT been cut when the 2.53 was released a couple of weeks ago. So there is no surprise here either.

Having said that, it is almost inevitable INTC and AMD will be in a vicious price war later in the year. It just hasn't started yet because AMD hasn't released their new 0.13 um chips yet.

IAO, I believe I posted about 6-weeks ago information from an article in a trade publication that outlined the expected INTC mid-May price cuts. If these are June cuts, they may be somewhat of a surprise. However, if they are mid-May cuts, I posted the specific price cuts about 6-weeks ago.

This would be no surprise to anyone following the industry if it is just the expected mid-May price cuts.

The price cuts I posted had to do with the newer 2.2 and 2.4 GHZ chips being released, dropping the rest of the line down in price.
