Ally is even worse.
I don't want to be anyone's "ally".
That presumes far too much. If I agree with someone on one topic, I don't want them to have expectations I will agree with them on another topic. That is awful. Plus it leads to people being angry and resentful that you weren't the way they expected you to be. Which is no one's fault but their own, however people with expectations never see things that way. They just get angry and stay angry because the world continually disappoints them.

I feel the same way about foreign policy. It is stupid and shortsighted to think of countries as "allies" because this creates an atmosphere of unrealistic expectations. It is better, imo, to realize that in certain situations the selfish needs of two countries may align- so that they can work together for some common purpose, but to expect more than that is silly. Same for people. Although I don't see much of a common purpose in a discussion.

I think it's mostly just the semantics of "friend" or "friendship."

That's a good point.

The term takes on a whole different meaning on the internet than it does in real life.

Of course, we also have to realize that some people, quite seriously, refer to TV characters, especially those in long running soap operas, as friends of theirs. They feel they know the people intimately. Of course, what they know is only the character the actor or actress is playing. Same thing as here, thought without the interaction.
