On (2), that's the definition of "success" that is troublesome.

That's what is troubling.

It is as if the "can do" spirit has just suddenly accepted a future without security at all, and said "can't".

The American way of life has just disappeared, without even an argument about ways in which to deal with this threat.
A military response is understandable and desirable in a military threat, in the short term.

But now the real issue is national involvement and dialog on dealing with security in international affairs. With the military in control, we'll only get military solutions, which clearly do not include preserving the American way of life as we have known it.

I.e., the military and administration can say, "kiss the Saudis, kill the terrorists, hope for the best, we can live with the consequences, a bit of terrorism is acceptable". Citizens may have another view.

Particularly, if terrorism in the US unleashes biowarfare, destroys a city, or some other event, which the military can accept. The people may have other ideas.
