Ali,

Re: "My take on all this is that the Opteron performance is highly overhyped, and
raises too high expectations. There is no free lunch in performance anymore, IMO"

Is this your "way" of saying it's the "process thingy" ??!! <ggg>

Make It So,
Yousef

"There is no free lunch in performance anymore"

At least there aren't many good ways to get a big performance jump with a new architecture. One way that hasn't really been explored as of yet, is with an on-chip memory controller to reduce memory latency. I think the evidence shows that memory latency is very important, even on an architecture optimized to take advantage of memory bandwidth like the P4.

Now as far as the demo possibly running at a slower than expected clock rate, there are numerous possibilities, up to an including the faster ones are in short supply right now. Another possibility is that, as you note, AMD is being really conservative to avoid the embarrassment of crashes during the demos. Or the comments were mis-interpreted by the reader, and the AMD rep. was trying to say the demos are more dog and pony than anything that shows off the performance of a quad system...
