Metal, it could differentiate if visible, as well as most visible materials. Also visible objects that have been subject to variance from the norm, by external factors.
A heavily traveled path should show as an anomaly, human artifacts should be detectable. Humans should be detectable, especially in groups.
As to why they haven't been wildly profitable, well...
