By: jgroup01 28 May 2002, 09:36 AM EDT Msg. 1276 of 1278 May 28, 2002 (ComputerWire via COMTEX) -- Marconi Plc was on the receiving end of an optimistic rumor yesterday with reports that LM Ericsson Telefon AB is on the verge on placing a 200m pound ($292m) order with the company for DWDM equipment. The logic behind the deal is that with a tiny 3% share of the optical market place, a deal with Marconi would enable Ericsson to fill out its product range. An order of this size would give a boost to London-based Marconi at a time when it is involved in acrimonious talks with its bankers, who want a sizable share of the company's equity in return for offering it continuing financial support. Marconi boasted yesterday that it has signed contracts worth "tens of millions of pounds" with Deutsche Telekom AG to enable the German incumbent to roll out broadband services. It said that its network management system, which has been in operation at Deutsche Telekom since 1991, will be enhanced so that DSL connections can be set up automatically. Marconi has also been awarded a contract for the Installation of symmetric high bit-rate digital subscriber line SHDSL technology, which it says will make 2Mbps fixed-line connections much easier and cheaper to install in future. ...... The U.K. phone-equipment maker is expected to sign the order from the world's No. 1 maker of wireless networks early next month, the newspaper said. Ericsson will resell Marconi's technology, which boosts traffic along data networks, to customers such as BT Group Plc and Telefonica SA, it said. Stockholm-based Ericsson this month closed its unit that developed similar technology, called DWDM, as part of a cost- cutting program, the report said. Both companies declined to comment to the newspaper. Marconi, which posted a net loss of 5.9 billion pounds in the year ended March, is trying to rescue its business after failing to gain approval for a new loan earlier this year. Swapping debt for a stake in the company is one option its creditors are considering, the company said earlier this month.
