I had a similar experience a few years ago, Karen.

I was teaching in a small, upscale town in Massachusetts and several families fostered " unaccompanied minors" from Cambodia who had fled from the oppression of the Khmer Rouge. There were fifteen teens who were assigned to me and none of them had any command of the English language. The church group that promoted their arrival intended that they would all be taught in the same manner and become supporters and social peers of each other.

Well, they were so wrong! It was evident within months that there was a real disparity between these teens and many
refused to talk or ever look at others. Within the year, one was fluent in English and accepted to Harvard College. It was through his perspective that I learned that we had combined many levels of the social strata within this group. Some were children of illiterate farmers and other's children of Cambodia's elite...doctors and lawyers. Within two years, several were part of the drug and gang culture in nearby Lawrence and many of the others were in local colleges.

So much for using a wide brush when we talk about any culture and their educational potential.
