Neville was similarly deluded into thinking that he was dealing with an opponent with limited goals. The Islamo- fascists are trying to overturn the present world order so that the Islamic nations end up on top. Some of the other groups in the Middle East have limited goals, but not the Muslim fundamentalists. Hand them Israel, and it will just encourage the use of terror to obtain further goals.

We were a sparsely populated nation along the eastern seaboard when Washington warned against foreign entanglements. Given the dynastic character of most European war up to that point, he was right. But we live in a different world. We are the world's super- power, and the linch pin of the international system of alliances. Furthermore, our willingness to cooperate in alliances allays anxieties about our strength, and prevents the formation of coalitions against us. As a trading nation with global interests, it is natural that we should look to stabilize the world, and as a nation animated by ideals, it is natural that we should want to help somewhat in the development of the world. In the long run, it is to our advantage to encourage peace and the development of democratic capitalism in the emerging nations..........
