It does not matter. If you do not know him to be lying, there is a proper way to behave. Given the doubt, to respond "boo hoo" was...............unacceptable..........

In pleasantville, if I said, "your mother wears army boots," you would be forced to take a stand even if it meant you would be beaten to a pulp. Insensitivity to the circumstances of one's mother has always been a challenge to a man's manliness. CH never fails to point out that this is a touchy point for him, even though he is an old guy. Lots of old guys don't have moms. One could wonder if he is capitalizing on the issue to gain some ground through, I am a victim, intimidation, but the safe bet is to mark it as out of bounds and bring your focus back to relevant issues. JMO
