I have heard of the HUI numerous times but how does anyone trade it?

I am not aware of a tracking stock for the miners.

Here are their 8 components:

finance.yahoo.com@^hui

Many simply use it as a gauge on how the entire sector will react.
Some small miners trade exponentially according to the index.

The $XAU and the $GOX are other indices that people follow for the sector.

Correction...

You can trade the $XAU and the $GOX via call and put options...

They are listed on the CBOE.

The XAU gets a lot more volume.
