Carl, you make good points. Why, then, all the blather and rhetoric from our side? The Islamists despise us and think we're a paper. Why prove it to them?

Hitler was a jerk and despite this the German people didn't exactly welcome the US as liberators. This is only true if you mean the time during the war when Hitler was still in command and, for instance, listening to radio broadcasts of the Allies was a crime threatened by execution. After the capitulation the US army was very popular, both relatively and absolutely. British forces were ok, French so-so, Russian horror. Many people who could arrange it tried to move to the US or at least British zone.
