Lucent Technologies Announces It Has Equipped More Than 25,000 Base Stations Worldwide to Support 3G CDMA2000
Milestone Shows Lucent Rapidly Deploying 3G Wireless Networks for Customers Globally
MURRAY HILL, N.J., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced it has equipped more than 25,000 base stations worldwide to support third-generation (3G) CDMA2000(TM) technology. Using CDMA2000 1X technology, Lucent's CDMA (code division multiple access) customers can double voice capacity and provide high-speed data services at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps), nearly 10 times faster than what is available on second-generation networks.

Lucent's CDMA customers simply add channel cards and make software upgrades to existing Lucent base stations to enable these advanced 3G capabilities. Channel cards are the key hardware component needed to upgrade an existing Lucent CDMA base station, providing a cost-effective and smooth migration to 3G voice and data services. Lucent has shipped this equipment to customers in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

"This significant milestone underscores our ability to rapidly deploy 3G CDMA2000 networks and equipment worldwide and further reinforces our leadership in spread-spectrum 3G technology," said Jim Brewington, president of Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "Our high-capacity voice and high-speed data solutions will allow our customers to compete more effectively and profitably, while paving the way for them to offer high-speed data services to enterprise customers -- a market with pent-up demand for these services."

In August 2001, Lucent announced that it was the first vendor in North America to begin shipping these CDMA2000 base station enhancements. To provide customers with a comprehensive CDMA2000 data solution, Lucent also provides the additional network infrastructure mobile operators need.

CDMA2000 is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being introduced worldwide and an international 3G standard established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). 3G CDMA2000 evolves existing CDMA networks, in existing spectrum, while it continues to serve existing subscribers.

Lucent is the global leader in spread-spectrum CDMA technology, having deployed more than 60,000 CDMA base stations in commercial networks worldwide.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, designs and delivers networks for the world's largest communications service providers.
