KYOTO, Japan -- Chip markets will continue a slow-but-steady recovery in 2002 with sales increasing by just 2.3% to $142.19 billion this year, followed by a much stronger increase of 21.7% in 2003, said a newly revised forecast from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization.

The global trade group convened in Kyoto for its spring forecasting session two weeks ago, and today, WSTS released its revised outlook for worldwide chip markets. The new WSTS outlook slightly lowers the expected growth in 2002 semiconductor sales from a previous forecast of 2.6% last fall. The new forecast also increases the predicted growth of chip sales in 2003 from the previous estimate of 18.5% to 21.7% (see Oct. 31 story).

WSTS said the move to positive growth rates will occur slowly, with only the Asia Pacific region showing positive chip sales growth in 2002. Semiconductor markets in Japan, Americas, and Europe will not register growth this year, according to the new WSTS consensus forecast.
