SEOUL, May 29 Asia Pulse - Korea's industrial output grew 7.3 per cent year-on-year in April boosted by rising production of automobiles, semiconductors and telecommunications products, marking the second consecutive month of growth and strengthening signs of an early economic recovery, the National Statistical Office [NSO] said Wednesday.
The back-to-back monthly growth comes after a brief contraction in February caused by reduced work hours during the four-day Lunar New Year holiday.

Before suffering a 2.6 per cent contraction in February, manufacturing production grew three months in a row in January.

Manufacturing output grew 10 per cent in January after posting a 3.3 per cent jump in December and 5 per cent spurt in November.

The ratio of stockpiles of goods remained at 69.4 per cent in April, which is still lower than the over 70 per cent-level for most of 2001 and 2002.

The 69.4 per cent figure is up from March's 67.9 per cent mark, the lowest since August 2000.

NSO officials cited rising industrial output and drastic inventory cuts as the typical signs that the economy has already begun picking up from last year's downturn.
