PARIS (Dow Jones)--French business sentiment rose sharply in May, suggesting
that economic growth in the euro zone's second-largest economy is accelerating
in the second quarter.

The manufacturing sentiment index, a broad gauge of health in the sector,
rose three points in May to 101, its highest level since June 2001 and above
forecasts for a reading of 98.

"This confirms the improvement in the industrial outlook," the government
statistics agency, Insee, said Wednesday.

The general production outlook, meanwhile, rose eight points to -5, well
above expectations and the highest level for that index since March 2001.

The personal production outlook, a gauge of companies' own plans for output
that correlates closely to industrial production, increased four points to 10,
the highest level since March 2001.

The better business outlook seems to be due to higher domestic demand rather
than firmer overseas activity.

The orders index, which includes both foreign and domestic bookings, was
unchanged in May at -17. The overseas orders index shed five points to -14.
