I had a similar experience with one who had learned (from childhood) to substitute intellectual aloofness for an erratic or missing affection. Thus, he was impervious to criticism and kindly feedback--and estranged from self examination. I managed to be of some small assistance, though it required some rough treatment... Unlike your case, however, there was no bad blood. When you have climbed off the ground in life as often as I have, you learn not to internalize the angst of others...
