Mainly, I think that you should endure without striking back for awhile. But it may be that you have to make it clearer that you accept responsibility, even while denying a conscious malicious intention, and show that you have learned something from the situation, for example, that one should not let things build up to an endless wrangle, but should cut one's loses when the other party is adamant about being left alone. You may even have to reiterate in various formulations to make sure everyone pays attention.......
