but what they haven't figured out yet is that the easiest way to see what the crowd is doing is to examine their own fears, impulses and prejudices.

But then you get into the shoedinger's cat thingie...or is it the Heisenberg principle? I can't remember. Once they start examining their own fears, impulses and prejudices, they will start questioning them and possible evaluating them in a contrarian manner. Of course, I do agree with you completely that they only need look so far as themselves (ourselves), but it is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
