I don't think that the majority of 1st year law associates do much of what anyone would call innovative. Also, the compensation jumped in recent years partly because the law firms were losing candidates to internet companies who offered options, laws firms with internet venture exposure, and investment banks. Another difference is most new hires in tech companies don't worry about billable hours.
