Previewing EMC, BRCD Analyst Days from Lehman Bros.

We expect next week to be a major marketing week in the storage industry, particularly given
BRCD's conference/analyst day and EMC's analyst day. We would note that valuation metrics for
both companies are becoming more compelling, but while we expect year-over-year comparisons
to become more favorable in 2H02, we have not yet seen signs of significant changes in end-user
demand.
At next week's BRCD conference and analyst day, we would expect the tone regarding near-term
fundamentals to be positive. However, since only one month has been completed in the current quarter,
management's visibility on meeting guidance will likely be limited. Look for the company to highlight its
competitive positioning, growth in its software business, the progress of its SilkWorm 12000 launch and
long term initiatives.
We do not expect EMC to signal a fundamental change in near-term demand. Look for the meeting to
focus on showing the path back to profitability as well as on long-term strategic plans, both from a financial
and product development perspective.
In the first quarter, revenue from the pure play public storage companies were, in total, down 4.5%
sequentially and down 6.9% year-over-year. We would expect this group to post flat-to-up sequential
revenues in 2Q02, and in 3Q02 we look for positive year-over-year growth.
