I think that was a snood? ( They use that word often in the N.Y. Times crosswords..) How about those little plastic rain hats that tie under your chin? Almost as scarey!

LOL Did your grandmother ever roll her stockings down with a ball canning jar rubber band? My daughter in law tells the story of her grandmother who always peeled her tomatoes and called them maters...she also had a glass eye that didn't fit well. She had another grandmother who washed her tomatoes only, and she called them tomatoes..she said for years, she thought they were two different vegetables! ..she said she was always scared of the mater's grandma and her non fitting eye!
