That is the question I always asked.

My mother would say, "I have a cute little joke..she worked for years at the telephone company, so she heard a lot, She would come out with some of the raunchiest jokes I've ever heard, and she would sit back and smile. She was Clueless as to the real meaning. She knew everyone laughed, and that's all she cared about.
