Global Flat-Panel Sales to Beat March Forecast, Researcher Says

Hong Kong, May 30 (Bloomberg) -- Global sales of flat-panel displays this year will be higher than forecast in March because of greater demand from makers of desktop and notebook computers, an industry researcher said.

Sales will rise 47 percent to $32.3 billion in 2002, 7 percent more than estimated earlier, Austin, Texas-based DisplaySearch said in a report. The market for liquid-crystal displays will rise 69 percent to $24 billion, the report said.

Shipments of large liquid-crystal display screens, or those measuring 10 inches and more, will rise 55 percent to 70.2 million units this year, 7 percent more than previously estimated, DisplaySearch said.

Suppliers of liquid-crystal displays, such as LG.Philips LCD Co. and Au Optronics Corp., are increasing spending and capacity, and boosting their output of large screens, the report said. That will lead to total capacity for liquid-crystal displays rising by 39 percent this year and 42 percent in 2003, up from March forecasts of 36 percent in 2002 and 32 percent in 2003, the report said.
