It's my guess, Don, that you don't personally add software to your machine. Do you?

I've installed all the software I use on my Mac. There has been absolutely no problems due to any installations I have done. Of course adding software to a Mac is so easy there's nothing much that can go wrong. I'm also not aware of good working software going bad on a Mac anymore - it use to happen in systems before 10 due to conflicts between extensions after new software was installed.

Is some of the software buggy? Of course! Particularly the MS Office v.X package. System 10 also has some bugs that need fixing. I expect all these bugs to disappear with upgrades.

Besides that, WinXP has backups of previuos registry settings - so if it is fouled up - one can roll it back to a previously good version.

The UNIX method of endlessly long PATH variables is not perfect either - but admittedly it does have the advantage of keeping applications more separate from the OS (at the expense of keeping applications more separate)
