UPDATE 1-Quake rocks Taiwan, no casualties reported Thursday May 30, 3:40 PMsg.news.yahoo.com TAIPEI, May 30 (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked parts of Taiwan on Thursday, the central weather bureau said, though there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake struck at 2.53 p.m. (0653 GMT), shaking buildings in the capital, Taipei, a bureau spokeswoman said. It was centred about 24 km (15 miles) off the coast of the northeastern county of Ilan. The National Fire Administration's disaster response centre said it had received no reports of damage or casualties. The quake was centred on the opposite side of the island from Hsinchu, the heart of Taiwan's key semiconductor industry, and major microchip makers reported no impact to their manufacturing equipment and work in progress. "We only felt it a little bit. There is no problem at all," said Jesse Chou, a public relations official for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co , the world's largest contract chipmaker. An official of United Microelectronics , the second-largest contract chipmaker, also said there was no effect on the company's manufacturing. Earthquakes are frequent in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific rim. A tremor measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook parts of Taiwan on Wednesday, but did not cause casualties or damage. One of Taiwan's worst recorded quakes occurred in September 1999. Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
