It was a very bold move on Musharraf's part to say this is not where I want Pakistan going. I'm prepared to cooperate with the United States in this effort to go after terrorists, and he has cooperated impressively.

This seems to harken back to the question often asked of the US: Are you in this with me through thick and thin until we can achieve victory or are you going to hang me out to dry when something else comes up...

President Musharraf serves a number of very dangerous constituencies; there is little doubt the US had to give him a warm, fuzzy feeling before he would stick his neck out as he has -- allowing overflights, in-country bases for American forces, standing aside while we dismembered the Taliban, policing at the border, in-country raids on suspected hideouts and the like -- all actions which greatly angered certain groups within the country.

No matter how effective these actions may have been the truth remains that because of them a number of folks in Pakistan would like to eliminate him with extreme prejudice.
