Edison Carrier Solutions to Be First to Commercially Deploy LambdaUnite(TM) Multiservice Switch From Lucent Technologies in United States; Will Also Deploy Metropolis(R) DMX

LightRiver Technologies to Work with Both Companies Installing Next-Generation Optical Systems

MURRAY HILL, N.J., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Edison Carrier Solutions, a regional "carrier's carrier" based in Southern California, will be the first service provider in the United States to commercially deploy the LambdaUnite(TM) MultiService Switch (MSS), a next-generation optical system from Lucent Technologies as part of an end-to-end solution, the companies said today.

The Lucent solution, which also includes the Metropolis® DMX Access Multiplexer platform as well as software and services, will allow Edison Carrier Solutions, which serves the wholesale telecommunications market, to provide services on a common backbone, thus increasing capacity while helping to reduce equipment and power costs as well as space requirements in a crowded central office environment.

"Our goal is to provide our carrier customers in the region the most efficient, scaleable, reliable and technologically-advanced network possible, and these solutions will help us to achieve our goal by integrating seamlessly with our current network," said Pedro Pizarro, vice president and general manager of Edison Carrier Solutions. "This solution enables us to meet our customers' needs while at the same time decreasing our capital and operational costs."

LightRiver Technologies, a Lucent Advantage BusinessPartner, is working with Edison Carrier Solutions and Lucent to implement the solution.

"We're pleased to be working with both companies to upgrade and expand this network," said Glenn Johansen, president and CEO of LightRiver Technologies. "LambdaUnite(TM) MSS is the best of the next generation of optical equipment, and it will keep Edison Carrier Solutions on the leading edge of telecommunications solutions."

The LambdaUnite(TM) MSS brings together switching capacity, functionality, density and flexibility into one small piece of equipment and its standards-compliant technology enables customers to seamlessly integrate with existing backbone and metro optical networks. It provides a bridge between data-intense metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. Metropolis® DMX, which is part of Lucent's Metropolis portfolio of metro optical networking products, provides next-generation SONET capabilities. It is an integrated SONET/Ethernet metro access multiplexer that, working together with LambdaUnite(TM) MSS, will enable Edison Carrier Solutions to cost-effectively meet its current metro access needs while providing a solid foundation for future bandwidth and service growth.

"We're very excited about the reception that LambdaUnite(TM) MSS is receiving from customers around the world," said Tim Sullivan, president, Optical Networking Group at Lucent Technologies. "Our latest line of next- generation optical products continues to gain traction."
