I think the trick is identifying those product from the ones that are not worthwhile, or even destructive. And when it comes to anti-virus software, I think it is worse to run a program that tells you your system is virus free than not running one at all. The false positives are tolerable and can be dealt with. But false negatives cannot.

I like Sandra, WinZip, BurnInTest, TastsInfo2002, and other fine shareware. But I would never trust free security software like anti-virus and firewall. ZoneAlarm is the exception, since it has been well researched and reported on by many outfits on the net. And ZoneAlarm is made by a company that does make money off of a commercial version of their product, which is the same product as their shareware version except with additional features.

JMO.
