India a major factor in East Asian security: US PTI Washington, May 30

US has described India as a "major factor" in East Asian security and welcomed the invitation extended to New Delhi to the forthcoming Asia Security Conference in Singapore.

"It has always been a little bit strange, and it is getting stranger, to talk about East Asian Security without bringing in India, a major factor in that respect," Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said.

"India was not part of our East Asian equation. It has changed and now it is possible to bring countries together in a multilateral setting to talk about problems," he told reporters.
In Singapore, Wolfowitz said, he will stress to defence leaders that the war on terrorism is a conflict between "two visions of the world".

The terrorists would like to take "the Muslim world, and maybe a large part of the rest of the world, back to the Middle Ages," he said.

"Al-Qaeda and other terror groups want a world ruled by intolerance and repression. They are not only opposed to the democratic values exemplified by the United States but also against an increasing number of countries in East Asia that have embraced democracy," he said.
