OT - Silver plays

There really are very few choices (and very tiny marketcaps). That's why I like silver here. If it starts to move investors have so few choices the stocks are bound to stay ahead of their underlying fundamentals.

HL, SIL, CDE, PAAS and SSRI are the one's I know about.

Of these PAAS is my favorite followed by SSRI. I'll occationally trade CDE. I like HL, but just can't stomach chasing it. CDE's financials are still kinda ugly, but it also benefits from higher gold prices so I think they'll survive. In terms of SSRI they have no current production. Purely reserves. That's why I'm not crazy about it. More difficult to value. Hard to say whether they are lining themselves up to get bought out or if/when they start production what will those start up costs be? Hard to say. I like PAAS since their merger. I've roughly calculated that for every dollar that silver goes up PAAS will probably earn another .50 cents (by 2004, their goal is to eventually produce 20 mil ounces a year, currently only 11). I see silver prices going to at least $7. PAAS seems profitable at 4.50 so roughly 1.25 in earnings at those prices. I think $7 silver would see PAAS at 15-20. However, there are some that think silver prices are going well beyond $7.

Currently only own PAAS as my LT hold. I buy and sell SSRI and CDE from time to time.

Hi Rory,

I share the same ambivalence as others about the silver stocks. So far, all I feel is seller's remorse, having got out of 50% of my PAAS after a big run up, and almost all of my CDE, some of which had doubled. At one point had a GTC limit order in to buy back my PAAS, but it began to seem out of reach. I think I will just sit tight on what I still hold.

Can anyone explain the big drop in crude prices today? I must have overlooked something.
