Jim, Re: <On top of that I believe over half the population is getting some kind of government check which doesn't bode well either.>

Put me on that list. Fired at the end of April. "Reduction In Force". (Merger of Verizon and GTE) Three of the oldest 5 in my work-group of around 40 people got the RIF.(One of the 5 oldest was on leave having his bladder rebuilt due to cancer, the other had a deliverable. My boss was one of the three.)

So I'm on the dole. $475/week.

The time off is nice, but the insult is crushing. I'm really depressed it came to that.

But I expect I'll find a job after 25 weeks or so.

Hi Jim, RE: "in FL as about 17% of the state revenue was coming from the sate intangable tax...a tax on the value of your securities."

Would you please explain this tax? Is it an annual tax on your net worth? If so, what type of net worth is not taxed (housing?)

RE: "Take any possible cap gains revenue from housing out of the equation because Congress gave that away about 4 years ago and all you see is a revenue shortfall disaster in the making."

I think the gov't has this backwards: do they want to grow housing or do they want to grow businesses across many industries (thus the stock market)? I think the gov't should reinstate some portion of the cap gains tax on housing, or apply the same benefit to stock cap gains.

Re: Bush

The relationship with Russia could help reduce US's dependency on oil in the Middle East.
