Vodafone and DoCoMo Battle it out over Location Standards

The mobile location industry is one of the most hyped and least
real sectors of mobile services. A year ago, the Location
Interoperability Forum (LIF) was set up by major handset vendors
to try to set common standards to unify the location market. A
year on and a look at the most recent LIF meetings held last
week show how much work there is still to do.

At the LIF meetings held in Aventura (Florida) USA on the 5th and
6th of September, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone crossed swords as
they tried to have there own preferred location standards
adopted by the LIF. NTT DoCoMo has rolled out the SnapTrack
technology from Qualcomm whereas Vodafone has trialed the
E-OTD service from Cambridge Positioning Systems, a technology
type that was selected early by LIF.

The two companies are keen to see their own technology
standards adopted and are backing different technology choices.
The two major network operator groups are lobbying to get their
own standards for the location market fully excepted. Meanwhile
the market is in limbo as operators do not invest and location
suppliers go out of business.

And once the standards are set, it is difficult to see much end
user interest in location services.

The mobile location market cannot be found, but the positioning
and posturing goes on regardless.
