Someone had mistreated your '63 Dart during its first 80K miles. Earlier owner(s) probably just added oil instead of changing it and your rings were all worn out. Or maybe someone drove it flat out for thousands of miles. Treated right, that particular model should have reached 150K with few problems. But that would have meant oil and filter changes every 3000 miles. At 80K the slant six should not have been burning more than a quart of oil in about 1,200 miles. Mileage seems low compare to what we take for granted now: about 18 mpg, seldom more than 20.
